I think the whole point to that scene was to show how emotionally driven Anakin had become.

Yes the point is out there however clumsily and awful it was presented.
The story of Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader is one of the greatest story materials to work with. And Lucas just sloppily hacked the shite out of it.
It's like watching a clumsy, fat fingered chef trying to make a delicate gourmet dish and just mutilating the frick out of it to where the end result is plopped and smeared all over a plate.
