I think QT underappreciates Bruce Lee as a fighter. It's true that some martial arts aren't necessarily effective in a "street fight". But Lee boxed in Hong Kong and practiced an array of styles -- Jeet Kun Do.

Lee wasn't a big guy, but he did also seem to have that mental aspect as well, which can make a big difference. As an example, another guy that was mentioned earlier in the thread, Ryan Hall, has a masterful mental game as a fighter. Master leglocker. The guy will literally purposefully stay on his back during fights to trap his opponents in a leglock. I'll listen to that episode just because I have so much respect for what he's able to do as a fighter.

*EDIT: I got some of Lee's martial arts mixed up. I still think he had good potential in an all-out fight.

Also people act like because it happens in a Tarantino movie it has to be fact. When he loves bending the truth to fit the story.

And isn’t the entire fight basically in a dream sequence that could also be exaggerated by the dreamer (cliff)?

The whole damn movie was a dream sequence. Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring are dead and Tex Watson still has his nuts.

Two great acting performances by the leads, but the script was garbage.

It's not a dream, it's a fairy tale... Through the eyes of QT. I think it's also his most rewatchable movie. It's just an unreal "hangout" film.

On another note, new episode of Rogan dropped today with Tim Dillon.

Please go listen. In the first hour alone:

-The View sucks and should be replaced by only men.

-Trans-racial activists are coming.

- CIA/FBI Infiltrating Antifa, Capital Protests, Summer Riots, etc.

- LA is a shithole.

- Non-binary/trannies/multiple-gender ppl are mentally ill.

- Building 7 was the same as Florida condo collapse... But not really.

- Did a plane actually hit the Pentagon?

- What's going on with the Saudi Gov't

Lee wasn't a big guy,

Lets be honest...previous Hong Kong films were Chinese on Chinese.

Lee became a huge star in Hong Kong partly because his movies showed him beating up big bad Westerners.

It created this belief that no matter your size, you could beat up bigger guys with Asian martial arts. The mystique and craze was born for Karate and Kung-Fu.

Sold a lot of Black Belt magazines and inspired Karate Kid years later and a million McDojos when Daniel says "I have to learn Karate", as if that's the only way he could defend himself.

It created this mythos for the discipline and Lee lead the way for everything Far East in the 80s to become a huge cult following... And 80s fad.

As far as "street fights" go, you take the average person who learns karate or kung fu, yeah, that may not be effective in a fight to the death. But Lee was a high level athlete, and you look at all those styles he was doing, I think combining those skills, he could essentially fight like a high level muay thai fighter. That'll work in any kind of fight.

It's not any one specific martial art that makes the difference with Lee. To me, it's the diverse array of skills he had.

I don't know what all skills Cliff Booth had, but I seriously doubt he could just kill Bruce Lee with ease like Tarantino said. All those skills, plus elite quickness, body control. Not sure about his strength, but he was probably elite for his weight. As a striker, it's more about explosion than brute strength.

For instance, I think Lee could be comparable to a guy like Saenchai as a muay thai fighter. Saenchai is little, but if someone's going to try to kill him with their bare hands, that's going to be extremely difficult. Even for a bigger guy to beat him in a fight, that guy better have some seriously high level skill.
