What gets me is when someone brings something in and the guy behind the counter tells them, "Oh, I'll give you $150 for it." The pawn shop owner then takes it to an expert and finds out it's actually worth $3000.
It's sort of a win-win for the pawn guys in other words. He's not gonna lose unless he's not able to sell the item, and the chances of selling an item worth $3000 for $200 is pretty god, no matter what the economy is like.

Hilarious how every seller immediately asks for the top price quoted for their item. I had a retail store and people would come in all the time and show me some book quoting a ridiculous price for the item they were trying to sell. As if a price in print meant that I was obliged to pay them full retail.
