Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sets Tarantino box office record; $10M more than expected

Tarantino's biggest opening weekend ever was just set with a $40 million stretch over the July 27 weekend.
The R-rated debut is apparently $10 higher than predictions expected.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has smashed Quentin Tarantino’s record for his films’ most successful opening weekend at the box-office.
The veteran director’s ninth film has beaten his 2009 movie Inglorious Basterds for amassing the biggest receipts at US cinemas.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood depicts an aging Hollywood actor and his stunt double as successful new actor Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) moves in next door.
The film is based on the real-life killing of Tate by disciples of the Manson Family cult.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood grossed $40m in US cinemas this weekend, beating the $38m amassed by Inglorious Basterds a decade ago.
Tarantino’s new film is his first made without disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. Bosses at Sony had predicted Once Upon A Time In Hollywood would make $30m on its opening weekend.
Overall, Django Unchained has so far been Tarantino’s most successful film. It made $425m worldwide, after opening with $30m in its first weekend at US cinemas in 2012. By comparison, Inglorious Basterds eventually made $321m worldwide.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is one of Tarantino’s most expensive films to make, at a cost of $90m.
Despite its successful opening weekend, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood only entered the US box-office charts at No 2 this weekend.
Disney’s new remake of The Lion King remains at No 1 on its second weekend.

These tent poles have made these numbers so skewed, if you don’t bring in 200 mil the opening weekend it sounds like you barely made money

I think A Star is Born made around $40 million on its opening weekend and I think ended with around $430 million worldwide.
I'd bet Once upon a time does about the same. Bodes well for his 10th and final film's budget (when and if that happens)

Sadly, movies like this will continue to be few and far between because our dumbed down society would rather watch 1000 Avenger movies instead. Grown arse men will go see the same movie 9 times and then buy the t-shirt, poster, doll, etc.

Non-tent pole movies are and will continue to be made but we wont see them on the big screen in wide release as much. Its funny that years ago direct to video was usually just garbage sequels or cheaply made B-movies. Now direct to video (or streaming) are the best movies Ive seen all year.

This. And they're buying up theatrical releases and streaming those as well. They're making more films than ever (in almost every genre) but they're split between multiple services and the theaters.
You've got Scorcese, Woody Allen, and Sandler making deals with streaming services. Those are the non-superhero films that you would've seen in the theaters.

Well, nobody wants to see that shite.
If Tarantino wanted to make more films, he would do it. I'm a fan of some of his films but wouldn't place then as high as his fans do. He's not nearly as prolific as he or his fans like to think he is.
