I just got a hardcover in of the book that I'm eager to read. From what I know about the book:
Obviously, Raylan isn't in it at all. He wasn't created as a character until about 10+ years later. Lead of the story is Det Cruz...the retired Detective Raylan met with at the bar that had originally arrested Mansell.
The reason Raylan doesn't seem right, is because he's basically playing the Crus role, which was as a good cop in a system that allowed bad people to get way unpunished. The story in the novel is NOT about police corruption but of a weak system that coddled criminals. Think Dirty Harry type stuff. When Cruz kills Mansell at the end, he finally realizes that he HAS TO end Mansell for the greater good and he doesn't give a single frick about it.
Carolyn is white and described as a bombshell.
Sweetie is straight and sort of a born again Christian.
So, not only did they ruin Raylan's character, but they bastardized Elmore Leonard's novel.
