Bee, sorry to hear about your shoulder. Did that blind date go badly or something?
Thanks Gris.
The "blind" date went well. The dinner was very good. That was the first time I had been to the restaurant. I was impressed. It really wasn't a blind date though. I have known this girl for a while through friends. She initiated this set up with me through a friend of mine so we went on a double. I treated it as a friend thing. She was interesting and we had good conversation but not sure if it is something I want to pursue. But since my injury, she has texted me nonstop worrying and wanting to help.
The injury happened late Saturday night while the date was Friday. I was hanging out with some friends at one of their houses out in Kenner. I was having a great time. But let's just say that I am not a good left arm wrestler.
As you can see from those X-ray pics my arm snapped. It was a pretty surreal experience. A friend of mine at the party immediately brought me to the emergency room. Had my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon yesterday and have surgery scheduled for Monday morning. This will be a long process to full recovery.

Bee, what did you do to your shoulder and your arm? Those xrays look scary.
Hat is going to be really upset if you can't post long diatribes before, during and after the show tonight and tomorrow night. Does Hollie know you're injured? What if she was in the finals? How would you be able to vote?

Does anybody else think that Simon Fuller will give "Listen" by Beyonce to Jessica? It will win her the competition.

From the looks of my last post. I'll be able to crank out a few long ones still.

No lie, my friends have felt so bad for me that they have been tweeting Hollie to send me a get well message
If she was in the finals. I would have fought through the pain and voted more than ever.
But she isn't in the finals

You posted while I was posting.
That's awful, Bee. I'm so sorry. No more wrestling! WITH were you thinking?
I had a big surgery on my foot some years ago involving lots of screws and pins. Big surgery. Long recuperation. Best advice I can give you is to do EXACTLY what the doc tells you. Makes a difference. The screws were supposed to be permanent, all 9 of them. One of them was hitting a nerve and driving me bonkers. Doc went in to take it out and I'd healed so well, he took them all out. Said he'd never been able to do that before. That was 10 years ago and I'm fine.
Take the pain meds the way they're prescribed. Don't be a hero. I learned that the hard way. You have to stay ahead of the pain with them. Don't wait until you feel pain. You won't need them long, anyway. Pain stresses the body and that affects healing. Biggest mistake some people make. Don't do things that cause the swelling to go up. Swelling also slows healing. If the doc say stay put, then stay put. Recuperation is a short period time in the big picture. Not doing it correctly makes is a long time.
Will you be in any type of cast? If so, google "cast blast". Some products will come up which are like spray talc. The cans have a straw like WD-40 that can go into the cast and allow you to spray to keep the cast dry and to take care of any itching you might have. I was in many casts, so I went through several cans of the stuff. No one tells you about this sort of thing and it's a lifesaver if you itch under the cast.
Bummer, Bee, but I'm glad you're date wasn't as much a lost cause as you thought it might be.

I haven't arm wrestled since I was in grammar school. A friend of mine was joking around and talked about beating me in arm wrestling. It was totally random. I'm right handed but we decided to go left handed. The rest is history.
15 people were there and witnessed this. Total silence and shock right after. When it snapped it was the Worst noise i ever heard in my life.

How did you end up with that type of injury?
The best news out of this injury according to the doctor is that I didn't hit the radial nerve. During the surgery, he will have to locate that nerve first and pin that back away from where he will need to insert the plates and screws. That nerve is the biggest risk in the surgery. My grandmother is basically now saying constant novena's since she heard about how delicate that nerve is.
I was prescribed pain medicine. I have been taking it regularly. If I don't, the pain is just too unbearable.
The doctor stressed the importance of following all the steps to recovery exactly just like you are saying. After the surgery, I won't be able to do much with the arm for 8-10 weeks. Then I will need 4 months of physical therapy. Doctor said it is vital that I let this arm heal with as little disturbance as possible. If I hinder the repair of the bone, the effects could be permanent. So I need to take all the medicines and follow every step.
The surgery it self will be around 2 to 2.5 hours according to the doctor.

They will apparently put me in a soft cast made up of big padding, gauze and ace wrap for the first 10 days after surgery. After that it will just be a wrap and a sling. They want me to be able to bend the elbow and slightly, delicately be able to move it a little shortly after in order to get as much blood flow to that bone as possible for healing. Also will be in a sling.
Trust me, anything is better than what I have right now. It's just so painful.

I really appreciate the advice and the story about your injury.
The cast blast thing sounds great. If I end up having to get a hard cast I would definitely look into it. I could have used that back when I was in 7th grade and I fractured my ankle. The cast was torture!
I'm really nervous about this. I know it's not heart surgery but the repair seems to be pretty intricate and detailed with a few risks that could either set me back or permanently hurt my arm. I hope it goes well.
The plates and screws are supposed to be permanent. Doctor told me that they will remove only if it has been at least 6 months, the bone has healed and if the plates and screws were hurting me.
I'm actually at work today. Since I have to miss two weeks after the surgery. I am going to work through it as best I could this week. I'm just fortunate that I have a managerial constructin job and not an actual on site labor position. I can do everything I need to do for work in this condition but a little slower.

Mine wasn't bone. It was the ligament across the top of your foot that holds the bones on your foot. I can still hear the snap. I twisted it trying to avoid running into someone who suddenly appeared in my path. Just that simple.
The surgery will go fine. Don't worry about that. Biggest mistake people make is not doing what they're told and trying to do things before they should. Sounds like you already listened well to the doc's advice on that.
My recuperation was much longer than yours will be, though I know in your shoes, it seems like a long time. It's not considering the injury.
Stay on top of that pain with the pain meds. If it says "every 4 hours", take them every 4 hours. Pain meds are meant to control pain if you stay on top of it. They do not take away pain when you let it get bad. They don't work that way. Believe me, I know pain, so I understand what you're talking about when you say it's unbearable. The more you try to relax and go with the pain meds, the better you are right now. If you get drowsy on them, go to sleep. Game show network is funny stuff when you're on pain meds.
Also, make sure to eat before you take those drugs. They work better and you can get pretty nauseated on some of them. Most of them advise to take with food. Good idea to do that. I also learned that the hard way because I didn't have much of an appetite after the surgery. Wasn't pretty.
You'll do fine. It's a pothole in the road. It can be repaired, but the workers are a little slow. Be patient.
I trust you have plenty of family and friends to make sure you have food and supplies in the house until you can do some things for yourself, right?

Over the period of time between the injury and surgery and after surgery, I was in about 6 casts. Long story, but mine was about 3 year deal by the time it was said and done. Went to all manner of docs in different cities and states, all highly recommended, who didn't know what in the hell to do with the injury. Finally, found a guy who did studies on this injury and wrote papers on it as well as giving seminars on it. Flew to Seattle to see him and he hooked me up with a LA doc who had done the surgery many times under him. I never found the guy because he didn't have his foot credentials on the interwebz at the time. He does now because I made a ruckus with him about it.

It will be fine. They have to tell you those risks, but it will be just fine. Don't concentrate on those. You have no choice in the surgery. May as well think positive about it. There's no reason not to. It's outside of your control. You'll do great and it will be okay.

They're usually permanent and mine would still be in, also, if a few of them hadn't started rubbing on nerves. He was only going to remove those, but when he went in, he saw how well I'd healed and took them all out. I have a very narrow foot, so 9 screws was taking up a lot of space! You can live with the metal and be fine. Might set off some buzzers when you go through security, though.

I couldn't function on the pain meds very well or drive because it was my right foot and I wasn't coordinated enough to drive with my left. I was lucky as I could work from home. If you're able to do that, do what you can.
Again, a pothole in the road of life and you'll do just fine if you follow instructions.

The finals are tonight, correct?
I think I'll skip. I am seriously not entertained by either of them singing. Will probably tune in to the results show tomorrow because I like Jimmy Iovine's comments.

They are tonight and I have no interest in watching it. Will definitely watch the results tomorrow night to see the others perform.

Tomorrow night will be excruciatingly long and mostly boring, in my opinion, other than Jimmy, the contestants' singing and the results. There will be probably an hour an a half of fluff. I may have to tape the results rather than watching them live so I can skip the fluff.
Tonight is only an hour. I'll watch that. At least, it's all singing and not so much BS.

Thank you. I haven't had many surgeries in my life. So that's basically the cause of my nerves. I'm a pretty active person and love to play sports especially basketball, so I'm just nervous that I wont be able to fully heal. But you are encouraging me that this will go well.

Yeah, that seems like along hard process. I'm guessing with lots of physical therapy.

I've been staying steady on them. Following the directions and all. I will definitely take this advice and continue to treat this correctly.

I know this because my sleep patterns was all off and I used to watch those old shows in the wee hours of the morning while my brains floated around.
That's hilarious. I'm going to have to check out game show network myself on this medicine.
So far the pain medicine has made me just have some crazy dreams. Two nights ago, I dreamed I was swimming in the Olympics like I was Michael phelps. I woke up in extreme soreness. I hope I wasn't trying to freestyle swim in my sleep.

The medicine I have been given do far has made me hungrier than usual so I am definitely eating enough to supplement the medicine. I have heard horror stories of taking this medicine without eating enough. So I will avoid that. Hopefully I can eat enough for the medicine after my surgery.

This is a good analogy. I used to intern for a road construction company back in college.

I have had tremendous support from friends and family since the incident. I need lots of help for just the little things and my parents and friends have been there for me. I'm blessed to have them all around me. I don't know how I would function right now without all them.

I bet that had to be a frustrating process. Glad you found the right doctor. The doctor that I have was highly recommended to me. I am lucky because this doctor usually just operates on local athletes. Called the office and explained the injury. The doctor said that it is a pretty unique break and he would be glad to fit me in. Seems very nice and knowledgeable. He performed a rotator cuff surgery on my friend's grandmother that went perfect. He is pretty confident that this will go without a hitch.

Sound advice. I guess I just have to focus on getting better from this point forward.

Yeah, that sounds like you had a lot of metal going in in a small foot.
Its probably better off in the long run for you to have all of the screws and all out of there.

Yeah, doctor told me that airport security should be fun.
I also go to a lot of sports events with metal detectors at every entrance. So that will be interesting.

A friend of mine dropped me off today at work. I don't really want to attempt driving whole on pain killers especially since I am already limited with one arm.
I will be able to do some work from home during that period after the surgery so I am mainly setting that up right now this week before the surgery.
I do appreciate all the advice and I will certainly shoot you a message to update you and will take any other advice and tips you can give me.

They probably aren't going to release a set list for tonight's show.
But to remind everyone, Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips will both sing 3 songs each. One will be a song that they choose to do that they felt was their favorite or best song this season. One will be an American Idol producer's choice. One will be an original song that both will sing and will be the first single for the winner.
My predictions for Phillips will be that he sings "volcano" for the song he chooses as his best. I really don't know what song the producers choose but I hope it is something like "beggin" like he did last week. I am convinced that the final song which is an original, will be tailored for Sanchez.
I think bebe sings "I will always love you" as her choice. I think the producers will have her sing "listen" like Tigers444 was suggesting. The last song will be probably made for her.
I hope the Phillip voters come out in full force tonight. I hope he is feeling okay enough tonight to perform well. His condition sounds like it is worsening.

Just noticed this.

That sounds so painful and just so totally random.
A total fluke and my foot swelled up like a big old I don't know what, immediately. It was so so painful and I was on vacation out of state at the time to complicate matters.
quote:
Thank you. I haven't had many surgeries in my life.
That's the only one I've ever had, but by the time the surgery came around, I was in so much pain for so long, I was ready to try whatever was necessary to get some relief.
quote:
I'm a pretty active person and love to play sports especially basketball, so I'm just nervous that I wont be able to fully heal. But you are encouraging me that this will go well.
It's natural to be nervous, but don't overblow it in your mind. The mind is important in healing etc... Surgeries are performed all day every day. You're one in a huge number and it's going to be fine. Start looking for the end of the tunnel, now. You'll get there and resume life. Focus on that. You're young and resilient. Stop living with the "what ifs" and predicting doom and gloom.
If it will make you feel better since you are religious, go to a Catholic book store and buy the Green Scapular. Have it blessed by a priest. Have someone keep it in the room with you until you can wear it or keep it near you in a pocket or in the bed. Say the one sentence prayer every day. If you can't, have someone say it for you.

I'm going to have to check out game show network myself on this medicine.
That and the old reruns of black and white or old shows will be entertaining. Lucy comes on Hallmark in the wee hours. Watch those, too. If you can find any old Andy Griffith shows with Barney Fife, they're remarkably funny when you're loopy. I would imagine you'd have stronger pain meds after the surgery.
quote:
I have had tremendous support from friends and family since the incident. I need lots of help for just the little things and my parents and friends have been there for me. I'm blessed to have them all around me. I don't know how I would function right now without all them.
I know the feeling well. I had to stay in the bed with my foot propped above my head for two straight weeks. I could only get up for the bathroom. It was misery. Only time I cheated. I finagled a way to get my hair washed with my foot in the air. It wasn't pretty, but I was desperate and those shower wipes only did so much. If you can't shower or bathe for a few days, get those big old hospital bath wipe things. I had to use those. No choice. They worked very well, but not on the hair.
I had to have a lot of help for a very very long time. Even after the two weeks, I only went as far as the computer just outside my bedroom and stayed propped up. I don't think I even entered my kitchen for a month. I couldn't put any wait at all on my foot for a long time, so there was no point in trying to do anything on the crutches. It was a royal pain my queen bahonkus, but I survived and I'm just fine, just like you will be.
Keep in mind that while this will be hard on you, it's also very hard on the caretakers. I know you will be extremely appreciative, but drugs and pain can make one frustrated, sensitive and cranky. Be cognizant of that.
Also, while on after surgery drugs and having been lying down a bit, take it easy getting up. Get steady before you start galloping around. Your equilibrium could be off. Mine was way off partly because the foot was involved.
Big old pothole. Fix it right, so you don't have to do it twice.

If you need to stay home longer than two weeks, then do whatever you can from home. Sometimes, you have to work back up to full days at the office, anyway. If you have trouble making a full day, don't fret. It can happen and unless you're job doesn't allow it, do what you can and get back home if need be. Take something home with you if you have to.
