I didn't like this film as much as liked Blue Ruin & Green Room.

It was the worst Saulnier movie I've seen, and, unless I'm forgetting something, the best Netflix original film I've seen. Shows how good he is.

Apparently it's the first movie that he's directed that he didn't write. That gives me hope that the fantasy stuff won't become the norm in his movies. Still, I think it was a good movie. There was some eye rolling, though. The Iranian(?) rape scene felt really out of place. I'm fine with having obscure endings, but I really have no clue what was going on with the Sloanes at the end. I love reading synopsis on shows like Mad Men where people smarter than me pick up on nuances of the material, but I'm not stupid. If I need to read an article to have any idea what happened, it's probably a bit too obscure.

But major props to Saulnier. He did something that Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) couldn't do with "Mute": took a subpar script from Netflix and made an above average movie.

This one fell flat for me. Intentionally vague to the point that I didn’t care about the characters or the plot. Some editing and pacing issues - which I usually don’t notice - that took me out of the immersion in the film.

Had a great feel and atmosphere but ultimately it didn’t make much sense.
