Doubt Leon would like Cook, too grey and not enough black/white storyline for him.

The black company is excellent though, agreed there (particularly the first 3 and the last couple.

Ah yeah. That's a good point. Croaker is just a damn fine character. I loved those books. The Books of the South aren't quite as good as the Books of the North, though.

If you're looking for Epic Fantasy comparable to Tolkien, you should read The Fionavar Tapestry series by Guy Gavriel Kay

Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle, sorry buddy.

With Cornwell a close second

Sorry, but these are NOT as good as Whyte's tales. You don't know what you are missing. Read the series.

I did say I would give him the chance to change my mind.

Have you read Lawhead and Cornwell?

Absolutely. It's an older series (first book was published in 1984). Gavriel Kay was handpicked by Christopher Tolkien to assist in editing the Silmarillion in 1974.

It does depart from Tolkien in a few big ways. The main characters are all from our world and are pulled in to fantasy world.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

quote:

In the three novels that make up the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy collected in this omnibus edition (The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire, and The Darkest Road), five University of Toronto students find themselves transported to a magical land to do battle with the forces of evil. At a Celtic conference, Kimberley, Kevin, Jennifer, Dave, and Paul meet wizard Loren Silvercloak. Returning with him to the magical kingdom of Fionavar to attend a festival, they soon discover that they are being drawn into the conflict between the dark and the light as Unraveller Rakoth Maugrim breaks free of his mountain prison and threatens the continued existence of Fionavar. They join mages, elves, dwarves, and the forces of the High King of Brennin to do battle with Maugrim, where Kay's imaginative powers as a world-builder come to the fore. He stunningly weaves Arthurian legends into the fluid mix of Celtic, Nordic, and Teutonic, creating a grand fantasy that sweeps readers into a heroic struggle that the author makes all the more memorable because of the tributes he pays to past masters.

Try the coldfire trilogy. C.S. Friedman about 60% fantsy, 30% horror, 10% Sci-Fi. Epic world building and completely original.

I am loving the fact this thread is 4 pages long. Maybe we should just do a fantasy fiction superthread? Kinda like Scruffy's Anime thread. Whenever we read something new we post it and either say Yay or Nay. Or if we want recommendations we go there and look or ask.

What say the assembled book reading nerds of the M/TV Board?

Anyone ever read The Broken Empire series? Book 1 is Prince of Thorns. Was looking at books and had someone recommend them. Seemed cool enough only 50 pages in. But anyone have any thoughts on it?

I still have the first one waiting to be read. I went on a science fiction binge and forgot about it. Drizzt is awesome.

I really enjoyed Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire trilogy, and the first two books of his newest trilogy have been good too.

He's very similar to Joe Abercrombie with the dark humor and gritty storyline.

And Jorg is a great amoral badass.

Given all the other fantasy you like you should check it out sometime, Lawrence is along the same lines as Abercrombie/Weeks to me.

Thanks for th input

Will for sure keep going on it then. Have a 5 day old at the house and when he is napping (which is pretty much all day) I debate if I should pick it back up or not. But will for sure now

Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It's not fantasy but you will love the character Pendergast and he's the main character in a dozen books after this one

I know you did, and yes I have read Cornwell and Lawhead. I did not read the entire series of either, though.
