First thing that came to mind.

Nirvana's 1992 VMA performance.

Kurt plays/sings the opening to "Rape Me" as a frick you to MTV.

Krist knocks himself out with his bass.

Kurt and Dave destroy the fricking set when they're done.

Dave mocking Axl Rose at the end.

This was fricking punk/grunge peak.

Aerosmith "Dream On" MTV Music Awards YouTube

Metallica "Nothing Else Matters" YouTube

Fleetwood Mac "Don't Stop" YouTube

Sort of ironic considering Dave has become just as dooshy.

Doesn't meet the qualifications exactly, but "Last Waltz" is just about perfect.

Also Pink Floyd at Pompeii.

It has to be live TV only. No apparent lip syncing.

Seems like there are some lip syncing ones in this thread.

Let's add the caveat of offering one band and one solo performer.

That was pretty incredible though. Hatfield sounds amazing.

I'll actually throw out one that hasn't been mentioned and likely wouldn't be. Most people don't like her, but the first time I saw this clip of Miley Cyrus singing You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome I was legit impressed. The song fits her voice perfectly:

Miley Cyrus live on Ellen.

Another one that may not get mentioned ever, but the performance by Kanye of "Hey Mama" on the Grammy's not long after his mom died is pretty great (and moving). For all of Kanye's bullshite, you can actually hear his pain when he sings/raps. This performance isn't so much "good" as in quality, but more of just how emotional and raw it feels. I'm not even a huge Kanye fan, but it's awesome IMO:

Hey Mama.

As for what I think is the best, the one that always comes to mind and that I've watched a ton of times is Heart performing Stairway to heaven for the Zeppelin boys. It's simply an incredible performance from Ann and Nancy (but particularly Ann...she SLAYS the song), and even has Jason Bonham on drums honoring his dad. And it brings Robert Plant to tears several times. One of the best live performances ever IMO, and I'd argue it may be the GOAT (though there are some great ones in this thread):

Heart - Stairway to Heaven

When the gospel choir gets cranked up and the stage opens up, it gives me chills no matter how many times I've seen it.
