Looking for some of your favorite family films to watch with children. You know, ones you've seen that you figure both children and adults would like. I just watched a couple recently I'll share and hopefully you'll chime in with some others.

First, our family really enjoyed "My Neighbor Totoro". It is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film. Wow, this film is so mesmerizing. The film was re-released by Disney in 2006 and it features a new dub cast. It is very well done in so many respects and I'm not usually a fan of animated children's movies. I highly recommend this movie for both children and adults.

The next one is "Paulie" from 1998. This is not an animated film. It's a totally different kind of movie, yet also outstanding. Don't know how I missed this one about a talking parrot named "Paulie". The movie stars Jay Mohr as Paulie's voice and Tony Shalhoub as a janitor (caretaker) who finds him imprisoned in a biological research laboratory, along with Gena Rowlands, Cheech Marin, Bruce Davison, and Trini Alvarado. It also features Buddy Hackett in his final film role, and Mohr also plays a minor on-screen character. Great cast, another really good movie for the entire family. Heck, my wife was even tearing up at one point.

Since most of the movies I now watch are ones recommended here on this board, I figured I'd start another one asking you which movies you'd recommend the entire family would enjoy.

Aside from Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies, any film from Studio Ghibli is highly reccommended for the family, and those films I just listed I may wait til they're 8.

If you liked My Neighbor Totoro you should definitely watch the rest of Miyazaki's films. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo would all be very good choices in the vein you are looking for.

Princess Mononoke and Nausicca and the Valley of the Wind are excellent as well, but more for older kids in the 10 range.

Geez OM, you trying to scar some kids for life?

I don't think I'd suggest Grave of the Fireflies for any kid short of high school, not to mention about as far from a family film as possible.

Fun Fact: My Neighbor Totoro was originally released as a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies. I really can't think of a worse double feature if I tried. They are two films more opposite in tone than I can think of.

But yeah, I think an 8 year old can take "Grave of the Fireflies". It's depressing as absolute hell, but its simply an incredible film. For an older person I'd put Mononoke and Fireflies among the first of the lineup, but for the younger ones, they'd be among the last.

Another fun fact: The Chinese think that "Grave of the Fireflies" is the greatest comedy of all time.

That's a little nuts, but I can only hope Totoro was shown after as a way to cheer folks up.

Hayao Miyasaki is fantastic. You can't go wrong with any of his movies, but my favorites, in order, are:

1. Princess Mononoke
2. Spirited Away
3. Howl's Moving Castle
4. My Neighbor Totoro
5. Ponyo
6. Kiki's Delivery Service
7. Castle in the Sky
8. Porco Rosso

I haven't seen the others.

He also had a big part in The Secret World of Arrietty, which was really just a Japanese remake of The Borrowers.

Was only animated by Studio Ghibli. It's not really a Studio Ghibli film like the others mentioned. Miyazaki didn't write or direct. GOTF.

Big Miyasaki fan myself. One thing that you'll always find in his movies is flying...in some form or another. And there's usually a cat somewhere as well.

I think Ponyo is the only one that I haven't seen, but the ones I have are all recommendable (Castle in the Sky is probably my favorite).

I also haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, but I do own it. It just sounds like it is damn depressing and sad...need to be in a certain mood for that.
