Watched both of these this weekend (laid up sick), having never seen nor read any version before.

The Branagh version is better in many ways, he changes the scenery a lot which makes for a bigger feeling movie, and he conjures a lot more emotion and dramatics, especially at the end reveal, but something tells me the original was far more faithful to the original Christie text and is probably respected more among book fans.

The old film was slower, and I still don't understand what Finney was doing with Hercule, he played him with almost a little Clouseau in him, but far more competant, obviously, and was all hunched over like he was almost a Cripple.

It was obvious the 2017 version tried to shoehorn some kind of race themes in there, which just seemed very very odd and out of place.

Overall, I liked both, but the 2017 version was more lively to watch.

Preferred the 1974 version.

I like certain movies that have a Play like feel.

Branagh's is more cinematic but I think half the characters were a total misfire.

The acting and characters were better in the 1974 version.

The new one was absolutely terrible. The old one was good though.

Watched the 2017 version with a buddy who said - I liked it, but I don’t agree with the ending.

I replied - well it’s a 90 year old book, bro.

I haven't seen the original. Branagh completely dominated the remake. He was good but the other characters had very little to do.

I read the book and saw the 2017 but not the 1974 film. Thought the '17 film did a poor job explaining the plot and had some ridiculous modern crap thrown in.

1974:
I hadn't read the book, the ending took me by complete surprise.
I wasn't as familiar with the actors, being a young teen.

2017:
I knew the ending ahead of time.
I'm a jaded old guy and I was familiar with every actor.

I enjoyed both.

The original is one of my favorite film, and is really the first "complex grown up films" I remember watching with my dad

Never saw the 1974 one.

But the 2017 remake was pure garbage.

Too much CGI in the remake (landscapes).

I take it the mixed couple thing isn't in the book?
