Compared to the new one, I think 95 beats it in both of those.

Outside of Sub Zero/Scorpion (where 21 absolutely had to get it right) the characters and performance in 95 were much better. Tagawa was much more believable and menacing as Shang Tsung for instance.

So much so that he did the voice and motion capture for Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11.

Trevor Goddard's performance as Kano caused Ed Boon to retcon him as Australian. (He was originally Asian)

The concept of Outworld needing to win 10 consecutive tournaments wasn't established until the 1995 film either, nor was the relationship between Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade.

In the MK1 booklet I remember it saying he was orphaned or abandoned in Tokyo by an American woman.

Always wanted followup with that.
