He did explain his motivation on several occasions. What I find hard to believe is that they let him stay in the group, but I guess it would be hard to fire him. Such a stupid controversy to begin with.

The guy was a mole, and a shitty one at that. He ended up fricking over the director who put him in the unit as his spy.

shite, I missed that. I kind of passively watched the last few episodes, so that is probably why. Apologies for being dumb.

Late thread revival, but..

That seemed a little unrealistic

I didn't find it too unrealistic. The guy pretty much showed that he was a boy-scout type and not keen on bending the rules.

Love this show, but I still have one episode to go. Unless it's revealed in the final episode, any reason for the BTK stuff in the cold openings? Do Holden & Tench (or rather, the people they portray in real life) cross paths with him in the future, and we get some kind of plot flash-forward in a later season?

BTK was a profiling failure IRL. He was active for a long time, though, and he made for a merry chase with letters and such, which makes him interesting to follow.

Yeah, based on the timeline of the show, I knew it'd still be 20+ years later before he got caught IRL...but I guess I wondered if someone from this group of characters play a role in his eventual capture, which may (or may not) explain why they're giving BTK face time in the first place...maybe I should go ahead and finish the last episode before asking, lol...

The group that didn’t want to turn in the tape never knew if it was Carr or Smith.

Just finished watching the show. Starts out a bit slow, but once the second episode hits, they go on a run of incredible episodes. The quality definitely goes downhill a bit in the last couple episodes. It’s like all of a sudden everyone became very dumb. I also found the main character extremely annoying, but that didn’t hurt my enjoyment of the show like it sometimes does with other shows I’ve watched. Last thing, the Kemper performance is incredible. The character appearing got the show going.

Holden knew who it was, the guy who said, "I can't be part of a cover-up. I don't do deceit very well." Wendy wanted to turn the tape in, and she would've proudly copped to it instead of telling Bill to frick off when he accused her.

They all heard Smith say that. I think they just assumed he was reacting to what had just happened. Bill still accused Carr. Holden didn’t really care. He never really wanted to cover up what he said anyway. The only person it really would have mattered to was their boss, and he was buddies with Smith’s dad.

A buddy of mine said he watched an interview with David Fincher, and he said he was hoping for at least 5 seasons. If it works out that way, maybe we'll see a flash-forward with BTK's arrest after all?

Finally watched the last episode...speaking of BTK, was he burning some drawings from an unsolved murder in the first or second (can't remember exactly) episode?

Anyway, I'm onboard for season 2, whenever it airs...

We are still in the late 70's when season one ends. BTK wasn't caught until 2005.

From what I have heard on podcast and other articles. BTK had killed 3-5 women during the 70's. But during this time period he was just toying with authorites by sending random messages via the postal service.

Agree. Anyone who loves Mindhunter will really enjoy Manhunt: Unabomber as well. Very similar concept. Two of my top shows on Netflix right now.

Correct, he wasn't caught until 2005. But if Fincher has a long game in mind, as opposed to just a "one and done" season, I wouldn't be shocked if he jumps the timeline in a final episode(s), showing an older Ford and/or Tench playing a role in catching him.

I dunno, to me anyway, as chilling as it is to include BTK on the side, I'd think they wouldn't be including those scenes unless there was some (eventual) closure with it. I only say this b/c we know who BTK was since he got caught IRL, unlike Zodiac (another Fincher project) where the authorities were left twisting in the wind at the end of the day...

ETA: I also feel like they might eventually deal with BTK because, like I'd mentioned before, one of those those drawings he burned looked eerily similar to a crime scene of one of the murders being investigated in the first episode, so it'd be a "full circle" kind of thing...

Well BTK is the holy grail of serial killers in many aspects. I believe next season we'll have to deal with Holden coming to grips with the fact that he got too close with Ed Kemper. I also don't think we are done with Bill's difficultly with communicating with his adopted son.

This series has a lot of possibilites it could turn to. But I do expect us to have more small town murders. I also think Greg Smith may be more of a problem.

wow Im shocked two people have posted this

I watched these two shows back to back and was blown away by the 180 degree contrast in quality.

Mindhunter has suspenseful writing and a visual style that plays in to the tension. Only real failing is the girlfriend who is totally implausible and a worthless bitch.

Manhunt is cliche after cliche with absolutely no credible dialogue and one implausible situation after another. I mean literally every scene sounds like it was written by an 8th grader that read the FBI wikipedia page.

Other than Paul Bettany's performance (whom I always enjoy), there is absolutely nothing good I can say about this amateurish poorly written hack job of an otherwise very promising story.

Yeah, I'm surprised no one has gotten in Smith's face yet, lol...I almost despise him as much as Kemper and Speck, but not quite

Now that there'll be more episodes, I agree that they'll probably open up the world a little bit more. Is it supposed to be implied that Bill's son is autistic, but no one could properly diagnose it back then?

His girlfriend gets on my nerves, but I think she's valuable for calling out his "home" personality being too close to his "work" personality, which he didn't seem to grasp until the final episode.
