Not really. Tolkien was a kind hearted man and it shows in the work. Does it get darker? Yes. Does it become more ominous in tone? Not really. And this is mostly due to the presence of the hobbits, which is kind of the point.

the books are alot more anti war then the movies where, that was one of the biggest differences I think.

And have fun, it's like the Book of Genesis, The Illiad and the Odyssey put together. And it's not very exciting.

The Book of Genesis, The Illiad, and The Odyssey are all far more entertaining.

Also, what "abilities" do elves have?

When they are chasing the orcs who have marry and pipen it looks like Legolas can see miles ahead and knows what the orcs are doing. I've also heard they can rest while running, so legolas never gets tired while chasing the orcs.

I've looked at the Elf page on wiki but it doesn't really talk about this stuff.

exactly evil destroys itself

Doesn't that mean good really didn't have anything to do with evil's downfall. The fellowship would have saved a lot of time and trouble if they just would have stayed out of it. Evil would have eventually destroyed itself anyway. I'm just kidding. I agree with you.

They can walk on top of snow. You can see Legolas do this in the movie when the fellowship tries to cross Caradhras.

can't elves live forever if they are not killed by some type of war action or along the lines of those.

they can't become ill or something

Interesting concept. Gollum (who could be thought of as either evil or else as victim of evil influences - or both) took the ring from Frodo but accidentally (or predestined to fall) plunged into the fires of Mt. Doom.

So either good did the deed, or evil imploded upon itself and destructed. Or an alternative scenario is that "good" personified by Frodo, Sam, and the Fellowship took charge of the evil ring and carried it to the place where it could be destroyed.

So many facets to this wonderful saga, so many possible interpretations.
