It wasn't just Jack's perspective. Kimmel mentioned that to Fox who didn't seem like he bought into that.
After Kimmel explained his interpretation of the ending which he said was Jack's perspective, Fox said the he agreed with that (or something like that) but I agree that Fox didn't seem real definitive in his affirmation.

He said that he agreed that his life on the island was his real life and that the show was basically about Jack's test, which it was considering he was the leader, but the other characters were still real and weren't just there strictly for Jack.

she was close to dying which helped her bring her to enlightenment. Many other things could have done this. But the poster who mentioned that the candy machine is where it worked was correct.

No commentary on how Jack told Hugo that it was always supposed to be him? It was reminiscent of when Mother told Jacob that before she passed on the title of Protector to him. I loved this. Also, Hugo told Jack that he believed in him before he went down into the golden creek, just like Jack told Hugo that before passing on the reins to him.
obligatory SIAP since I missed about 40 pages of this thread.

I think he had a shitty opinion of "other people." I don't think he ever got to meet "his people," 'cause they really only existed in his fantasy. They were some ideal that he had to get to, but never could. That's part of the tragedy that he desperately wanted to get to a place and people that didn't exist, so he was destined to fail no matter what.
Agree. One of my main qualms with "Across the Sea" was the lack of character development by the writers for the motivations of Jacob and his brother. It probably would have taken another episode to develop that part of the plot. For instance if Jacob had fallen in love with one of the Roman women or anything other than "they don't seem so bad", I could see his drive to prove the worthiness of humankind to his brother. MIB's motives were easier to understand since had been visited by the ghost of his real mother who told him that his people came from across the sea. As it was written though, their motivations just didn't seem have enough substance such a fervent game.

I think it was hinted at over the show that it was always supposed to Hugo, and I really like the fact that he is now the Island protector. I think he will make a much better Jacob, and since he doesn't have to worry about MIB anymore, his main focus should be on improving lives of the future Others and the world in general, something Jacob didn't really give a flying frick about. Jacob was an a-hole, while Hurley is cool and a truly good person, one of the few characters you can say that about in the series.
And I like it how Jack went from a person who had very little faith in Hurley to someone in the 6th season he would trust over himself. Thats a character development that people have overlooked I feel.

Nice insight. I loved that scene with Hugo, Jack and Ben. I thought Garcia's acting was awesome. Hugo welled up and said there was no way he was going to let Jack die. Was definitely one of the fine emotional scenes in a finale that was filled with emotion.

Nods. I also loved the comment by Ben: "that was the way Jacob ran things" or something like that letting Hugo know that he could make up his own rules and make it a better world in which to live.

I actually thought it was going to be Hurley all season because he was the one who saw the good in people. After Across the Sea I thought it might be Jack. Great scene.

I agree. I'm really going to miss this show, but it's almost time to let go of it. I watched several episodes of Season 5 tonight from the beginning and am beginning to come to an understanding that everything has been answered for us.

Everybody catch the scene with Walt in The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham. That was poetic, and part of the finale, in my mind. His oldest appearance, yes? Long live Walt, ye who appeareth where thou not shalt appearath to be.

I will probably watch the enhanced replay Sat. night; someone mentioned it in this thread. I really don't have any major questions but the enhanced episode might clarify some minor points like how Jack got out of the light chamber and why he didn't become a smoke monster after coming in contact with the EM radiation. My guess is Jack was blasted out of the light tunnel the same way the MIB was when Jacob tossed him down the light tunnel. As to why Jack didn't become a smokey: maybe it was because Jack and Kate had killed the MIB at that point or maybe Jack was pure in heart and couldn't be infected by the darkness.

I was under the impression that the chamber flooded and washed Jack out of it. The darkness had been destroyed.
