In a laundry list of problems, the failure of Episode VIII to advance the main narrative is certainly problem number one.

I agree with this. If TLJ was simply a film that came out, it wouldn't be considered bad. The major criticisms of it have to do with larger stories and larger characters.

It might not be a good movie, but if no one knew the rest, it wouldn't be bad. AOTC is a bad movie. It would be a bad movie as a standalone, too.

People say TLJ killed Star Wars and forget AOTC was such a turd, it made 400 million less than Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith was still 200 million south of PM, despite being a better movie. AOTC did a lot of damage to the franchise.
