Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Philips talk more about a 'Joker' sequel

“I guess the fear was that you’d get locked into doing something repeatedly that you don’t really care about, that doesn’t motivate you or excite you,” Phoenix said during an interview for an upcoming cover story in The Envelope. “Part of the whole attraction to me [of ‘Joker’] was there was no expectation. I didn’t sign a deal to do [more movies]. It was a one-off.”
“I wouldn’t just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful,” he said. “That’s ridiculous.”
“Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels,” Phoenix said. “In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.’ It was kind of in jest — but not really.”
quote:
We haven’t talked about it a ton,” the director said. “We’ve only talked about the fact that if we ever did one — and I’m not saying we are because right now we’re not — it couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime.’ That just doesn’t interest us. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does.
“Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, outside of all the noise and mishegoss of the last month and a half. I think the reason why it’s resonating is what’s going on underneath the movie. So many movies are about the spark, and this movie is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting."

I’d be down with it. Take your time and find your story. The fact that Phoenix seems eager to do a sequel and wants it when he turned down frick you money from Disney to play Doctor Strange because he didn’t want that commitment should tell you how much he loved working on this project and how much potential he sees in it moving forward.

If I wanted to watch Taxi Driver or the King Of Comedy again, I'd just watch those movies.
If I wanted to watch a sick, disturbed, psychotic loser murder people I'd just watch the nightly news.
Anyone enamored with this movie and thinks of the character as some sort of "hero" has some serious issues.

Yeah I loved the movie but if anything it’s a textbook example of why we need more mental health care in this country, but I don’t trust certain groups with that power.

God I hope they don't do this. The movie was never meant to have a sequel. The story is a complete arc with nothing else needed.
They just saw this movie make a ton of money and want more, the story of all sequels.
A sequel could never match the first in tone and feel. I have no interest in seeing this Joker doing Joker type stuff in Gotham.

Well that came out of nowhere.

In the future..in this world..
I could see the riddler being a unabomber type of villain.
Maybe even a hobo that people would pass everyday and never suspect. They're always talking crazy shite, what if one of them was actually a genius? Or just a self imposed banishment from a society he hates?..
We could raise more mental health awareness or whatever.

It was a response to what was said before me, hence my comments.

if I wanted to read bad posts, I’d just search for Jack Ruby.

I would love to see one movie with Phoenix completely in his Joker persona.
I loved the movie, but I would really love 2 hours of just all Joker.
