Grabbed from his GQ interview, via Film Threat, James Gunn sums up what fans (and lots of YouTubers) have been saying for YEARS. There's not so much 'super hero' fatigue, but instead, mediocre movie fatigue.
So, we agree on something. That's a start.

Man, a lot of James Gunn hate here. Is it the pedophilia?

What hate? Where? There’s agreement on the state of movies here.

There can be both

Its both. Mediocre movies sped it up but the transformation of big Hollywood movies being almost exclusively centered around comic book characters made a ton of people check out of the movie theater world.

Yeah, genres/sub-genres can dominate/saturate the industry in cycles. The movie market was once flooded for a significant period with say, Westerns, or slasher films, teenage/college sex comedies, muscled action pics, sci-fi adventures, superhero movies, etc.
I don't think the hero element will ever fade away for too long tho. Audiences will always gravitate towards people doing extraordinary things or possessing extraordinary powers, whether it's Greek/Roman gods, Superheroes, fastest-gun in the West, Jedi Knights, Vampires, soldiers with uncommon courage, etc.
But mediocre-to-poor movies will certainly cause fatigue & shorten a genre's endurance.
