We’ve been seeing the decline of the big franchise nostalgia bait movies for the last 5 years. but with nothing else in comparison doing well at the box office either it was chalked up to “ theater chains are dying”

WELL with Obsession and Backrooms doing very well (Obsession growing numbers in weeks 2 and 3) out performing Star Wars and what looks like the inevitable bomb that is Masters of the Universe, is this the end of the nostalgia bait era? The industry can’t hide behind the excuse that movie theaters are the problem now that new low budget original movies are going very well and putting asses in seats. Have finally turned the page on the worst era in cinema history?

new low budget original movies

I feel like you are missing half the story with these movies.

They both had big online followings before they made these movies. Backrooms is a 4chan movie and Obsession creator has a big youtube/tiktok following.

yes we are in the Youtube era

We’ve been in a franchise era since the first silent sequel.

Movies and shows are being intentionally made with less quality and higher budgets. Despite time and time again, we are seeing projects like Obsession, Godzilla Minus One and Backrooms popping up was great success.

The message is clear and there’s no lack of talent, but studios are still insistent of cranking out high budget low interest, garbage movies & shows.

I think so. As the big budget films fail, they have started to really cut back on cgi budgets to save money but they look worse so the downward spiral continues.
