This is the first thing we disagree on

I loved the first iron man.

I am happy about this, but some of the positive ("fresh") reviews ain't that great.

This is the problem with rottentomatoes. Every, "eh, it was pretty good but not great" review is counted as fresh, so a 96 can be deceiving. Metacritic is much better, and Iron Man 3 is at 67 over there

I'd give ti a C-, which yea might count as fresh for RT.

Next to the 93% for Iron Man it has the average rating of 7.6 out of 10 which is comparable to a Metacritic rating of 79 out of 100. A great movie with an average rating of 9.8 out of 10 can have 1 negative review and therefore not have a 100% on the tomatometer. An okay movie can have an average rating of 6.0 out of 10 and have a 100% on the tomatometer because it lacks a single negative review. The average rating listed and the general favorability (tomatometer) both have purposes. The problem may be that you've been ignoring the average rating.

Meh, they sort by and advertise the "fresh rating" (which is fundamentally flawed), while the average rating is comparatively obscure. I'll stick to metacritic

The consensus?

It probably seems like that to someone who just found out it existed 2 minutes ago. It uses the same average rating that Metacritic uses.
