I saw the original a long time ago but didn’t have really internalize it too much. Decided I’d watch the entire series minus 5 which by all accounts is dog shite.
I know I’m in the minority but I think the second one is my favorite. I love the random anthology bits and just random stuff peppered in throughout the movie. I could have done with more of that. Even some of the minor stuff like the camera man doing the interview just seeing someone in the background on the porch watching them. And there are some real standout scares. Coming to the open doorway with the clown standing right by it is such a mind frick moment. I also loved the shot of the ghost writing “yes yes yes yes yes” on the table when the ghost hunter says “do you mean us harm.”
On the negatives, I feel the story is muddled and the characters are the weakest in the story. And some of that talkshow stuff was weird and felt real fake.
Now from here, I could go in either direction, but I guess I have to go with the original as the second best. Very simple story that sets up so much for the following movies. I have to give it props. I do think it’s the least scary of these movies. But it is memorable. And I think it was made for $30,000 which is super impressive.
The 4th is the next one in the ranking. There’s a lot of freaky stuff and it’s all well done. I just for the life of me think I can’t get over the motivations for the characters staying in the house. I know all of the other movies deal with this question. The second dealt best in that they just couldn’t leave. Here, I know eventually they’re trapped but I am moving to fricking Australia after I see someone has been taking pictures behind me. There are some freaky scares. Though more could have been done for making the woods creepy and doing a bit more.
The third movie, WTF even is this. It’s memorable, that’s for sure. Probably the most memorable scare when that lady realizes the clown is alive. But…. The rich dude being an angel? What? I think this movie is messy in execution. I know this was always the intended ending of the first three movies but they needed to build up to this better. Just seems overall rushed and other than a couple of excellent scares, this fails most as a horror movie. I didn’t hate it. But could have been better

I love the Hell House movies. Even the fifth one is worth watching. Main gripe people have with it is it not being found footage, but it had its decent parts.

I think IV is my favorite besides the original. They're all pretty good though. Definitely one of the most underrated horror franchises.

Got to add the LLC? Otherwise people will think you’re referring to Hell House, a fricked up 70s book that was turned into a much muted down movie (a woman gets raped by a zombie in the book…)
