Well, that is what I was going to say. Also, it kept a sense of normalcy in his life. He was an employee of Fedex. He delivered packages for a living. Once that package was opened, his connection to his old life was all but gone. All he would have had if he had opened it would have been the tiny picture of his girlfriend. He wanted to return to her so badly that he could not bring himself to open that package and give up hope.

That's all fine & dandy, but had that been me on the island, id'a opened up that package lickity split, and if that sumbitch contained something useless, suicide here I come.
