But Nick isn't a good writer, see Season 2.
He is a good writer that thinks he is a genius.
Season one really benefited from fukunaga’s direction. The Beaumont/port author robbery scene tracking shot wasn’t great writing, it was awesome filmmaking

The acting, too. Rustin Cohle would have been an utterly absurd character if almost anyone else (or even MM at any other point) was in the role.

These 2 tough as nails characters...when they both break down in episode 8, it hit me misty eyed. Hellaciously good acting by both.
It’s not about the Tuttles or Childress or Carcosa...those were all misdirection.
It’s all about friendship- reluctant friendship but ultimately friendship.
And it’s about a nihilist that develops hope in the end.

Season 2 had very capable actors and was an absolute mess.

Way too many storylines. They went back to basics in season 3, and it was great. Really enjoyed that season.
MM and WH turned a decent cop show into a damn good one. It really was about their partnership.

That's why people love season 1. And the tone and ambience.
Cary Fukunaga was more important to that show's success than Pizzolatto. And that they struck gold with the Harrelson/McConaughey combo.
