I know Bale takes a lot of heat for the growling voice, but after watching TDK a few times I realized why his voice is egrigiously harsh at the end...because he's hurt after his fight with the Joker. He's hurt, winded, and still trying to do the disguised Batman voice. At least that's what I tell myself, so I give it more of a pass than most.
Also the thought that the grunting was deliberate to either disguise his voice or make it sound intimidating to crooks. You do kinda expect a guy wearing the suit and cape to speak in a scary manner.
