Fargo says its based on a true story but the Coens said that's just some bullshite they threw on there for fun and the movie is completely fictional. I didn't like the movie any less after I found that out.

Okay. I see Honesty in that revelation.

A lot of them actually say that they're "inspired" by a true story, which gives them room to go anywhere with their bullshite.

After watching Hidalgo really hungover one Sun. morning, I wikied the dude Frank Hopson(?) and learned that while he really was an accomplished endurance racer, there was no great race across the Arabian desert much less one won by an American on a little mustang pony. It was just a barstool story that the dude told for decades. As a frequent teller of unlikely barstool stories, I'm moved by this. A hundred years after his death, a fricking movie was made of his story.

based on a true story
for hollywood means
there was this story that really happened we are going to take some elements from the real life situation and make it into something that people actually enjoy even if it means changing major aspects of the true story.
