Great book and very solid movie. I really enjoy most of Martin Cruz Smith's books but you have to have an appreciation for extremely dark humor.
William Hurt does a very good Arkady Renko. He more or less re-creates the role in Dark City which is one reason I like that one so much.

Actually, a good 80's style thriller. I enjoyed it.
