I think it depends on the type of film

A good example of how important this is is the Holdovers. It was released this year but looks like an older movie. I don’t think it works if it looks clean

My problem is with CGI, every damn movie now just looks like a video game. It's even being used for things like fires and gunshots/blood. I just have a hard time getting into movies that look like PS5

It’s not just cgi. There are plenty of movies that don’t use CGI that also have that “clean” look

But I've also seen recent movies that had "film grain" added back in. There's something off about it, maybe it's too uniform across the different brightness levels. You can't fool us -- it still looks fake.

It’s funny. My dog barks at other animals all the time when watching movies. The giant mole in avatar, sending bat an eye
