link?
Maybe some people don't like it as much because its not as good. I don't hate it, but its not in the same class as 1 and II. The biggest problem is the horrendous acting primarily by Sophia Coppola. She is laughably bad. 2 scenes stick out: 1 she is walking with Michael and Tony and there are telling her she can't see Vincent anymore and 2 SPOLIER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Her death scene. Also Pacino kind of dips into Bill Shanter territory a few times, there are scenes like his diabetic stroke, where it seems like he is doing Big Boy Caprice from Dick Tracy still (for those too young to remember, Dick Tracy came out the summer before GF III).
There are also some inconstancies with the story, but tha;s another story.

People forget that 3 was nominated for best picture (assuming you give any credence to the Oscars)
No on both counts.
The Best Picture winner that year was Dances With Wolves, also nominated was Goodfellas,

My guess is the nominations were going to happen as soon it was announced there would be a third GF.

The first two had elements from the book. The third didnt if i remember correct...and there was just some weirdness and stuff going on in it. I didnt care for it as much as the first two

Michael is a complete puss in 3.
I get what they were doing. Trying to make him an old man who is sorry for the bad things he had done.
But the reason I loved 1 and 2 was because of how stone cold Michael Corleone was.

I thought Godfather 3 was horrible the first time I watched it but after watching repeat viewings, I've liked it more and more. My biggest gripes with it is the Sofia Coppola casting (duh) and the fact that it concentrates way too much on the women. Why was there so much screentime for Coppola, Keaton and Shire? The first two Godfathers concentrated solely on the men of the Corleone family. Women were shut out or treated like background characters. It didn't make much sense to have them play such a prominent role in the third movie.

really agree with you man, I actually re-watched GF 3 last night...that movie is amazing. If you pay attention to the diabetic stroke...mike screams out Fredo! Very moving...

Because he has turned into a puss. I don't want to see Corleone as a puss.
This is the Michael we want

Not the one that was portrayed in 3. Again, I get what the filmmakers were trying to do. But it went to far to the opposite end of the spectrum.
ETA: I know that it is probably realistic because as people age they usually begin to feel bad about the bad things and mistakes in their lives. I just don't like remembering one of the greatest characters in movie history as a whimpering old man.
Brando wasn't a puss in the first movie. And he was in his twilight.
Speaking of Brando, another thing I didn't like about the third movie is there was nothing about his character. Hell, the best part of Part 2 to me were the flashbacks with Deniro showing how Vito came to America and began his rise to power.
