Watched this for the first time last night.

Let me start by saying I really liked it. I thought it was a really good movie, well acted by Crowe, and Phoenix was a great villain, and kind of how I always pictured Commodus in my own head.

But, I am confused how this got best picture. 2000 wasn't exactly chock-full of great films, but off the top of my head, Requiem for a Dream and Traffic were better, and Almost Famous (haven't actually seen this one) seems to get better critical acclaim.

My biggest complaint with the movie was the cheesy dialogue. There were at least 7 times where I paused the movie, said the next line, and sure enough, I was right. Just a lot of cliche, formulaic dialogue.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought this...?

one Requiem for a Dream and Traffic probably were not going to win best picture for what the movies were premised around. Secondly is like a popularity contest and Requiem and Traffic didn't exactly get the hype (maybe traffic) that Gladiator received. Strictly my opinion. i loved requiem but its not up there with best picture by my standards or hollywood's i imagine. Traffic wasn't really all that great.

Now, Almost Famous on the otherhand well you need to see it. cheesy dialogue in this one as well but every movie has some portion of cheesy dialogue.

i can't sit here and compare the two, but both had great cases for best picture.

Gladiator memorable line:
quote:

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Almost Famous is packed full of memorable moments throughout the movie but the one that probably stands out most is the tiny dancer scene. If you've seen the movie then you know what i'm talking about.

Best picture is usually a popularity contest. Not always, but most of the time in recent history.

More people saw it than Traffic. Millions more saw it than Requiem or Almost Famous.

Yeah, I liked Requiem, but I will never watch it again. It is just too grueling to watch again.

its really not that bad the second and third time around.

Its not best picture worthy strictly because of the content within the movie. Its a movie about heroin and double sided dildo's; not exactly best picture material.

Hey. Any movie with Jennifer Conneley nudity is automatically oscar worthy.

Gladiator is one of my favorite movies along with Saving Private Ryan. A couple of scenes from each of these movies always got to me. The scene in Gladiator where he was dying and saw his family, and the scene in SPR where he was at the D-Day cemetary in France talking to the Captain's gravestone made me cry. Almost.

I liked Gladiator, but it's one of the most overrated movies of all time. I doubt it was even in the top 10 best films of that year. And Crowe only won his Oscar because he got screwed out of it the year before with a far superior performance in The Insider.

The dialogue in Gladiator is horrible. Mainly because they started shooting without a finished script.

I really liked Gladiator, but it's comical how historically inaccurate it is. Just about all of them are.

i loved gladiator, but it felt more like a die hard from ancient rome than a typical best picture flick. still a totally badass movie though.

I enjoy Russell Crowe. I definitely agree he was robbed of an Oscar for The Insider.

I also think he was robbed for A Beautiful Mind. That was the year he threw a phone at someone or punched a papparazzi or something.

Pretty cool how they finished the film after the guy who played Proximo had died
