So how overdone do you think it was?

well Fick made it pretty clear that Captain America had connections(to help keep him at the top and out of trouble) and he wasn't real respected by the men. Wright documented a lot of the words right out of his mouth. I know people that get geeked up like that so I guess it could be true......but if he hopped 6 inches I'm sure Wright turned it into a foot if that makes any sense(but I guess that's just how he saw it). I know when I see someone acting retarded and I try to imitate them I do a little extra for effect.

it gets talked about on the regular, but thank God it doesn't happen now a days(like it did in Viet Nam and I'm sure other wars). Now there is too much accountability but that's a good thing. It's a lot harder to do shite and get away with it now, more so than ever. See Abu Graib.

The way he was portrayed, he wouldn't even be competent enough to manage a nepotistic connection.

this exact argument was stated in the book. I gave "1BA" to someone so I can't find the exact text, but Fick and Cpt. America weren't enemies or anything, I mean they got along OK it seemed, but he did state that he could see why people wouldn't respect him and he was someone that Fick didn't aspire to be.

and lets be honest, there are a shite ton of incompetent fricks wearing stripes in our armed forces.

Perhaps I'm just a stupid civilian, but the common belief is definitely that the Marines don't suffer from that stuff nearly as much. I guess that's what I found off-putting about GK - I wanted to like the Marines a lot (which I do), but this didn't help me to do that. I know I'm stupid for having a naive view of how they are, but it still sucked to have my bubble burst.

Supposedly, he was generally a pretty likable guy who rated pretty well on paper but once he got in a combat zone he went off the deep end mentally.

The battalion in question was First Recon. Recon Marines normally operate with greater autonomy, and usually the highest ranking soldier in immediate proximity in the field is a team leader (for instance, SSGT Colbert was a team leader in Afghanistan and I believe Eric Kocher and at least one other prominent team leader in Bravo Company served on his team; note the frequent fond references to Afghanistan in the series). IIRC, guys like Encino Man, Godfather and Casey Kasem normally didn't operate in the field and hadn't experienced combat prior to the invasion.

If I remember correctly, Godfather was in charge of a Parade Squadron before he came to Iraq. I'm surprised knowbody has brought up how the SGT. Major abandoned his team when he was in the first Gulf War. He got the nickname "Coward of Khafji".

I mentioned it but didn't go into detail. Also Casey Kasem ended up doing big thangs in Fallujah a year or so later. He ended up being clutch according to Fick's book.

Yep that's exactly how Fick worded it. In Gen Kill it made it look like he started losing his credibility just after they got in Kuwait. By the time the war kicked off they just thought he was a joke.

Fick's book.

I read "One Bullet Away" after the Hurricane. I have to say that I was expecting him to go into further detail on Capt. America and Encino Man. He mentions them, but in not detail like Wright did in GK. Besides the Iraq chapter, the book was pretty dull.

See, the Iraq part was my least favorite of the book. I preferred Wright's account.

Me too! I really thought we would get more detailed account from the intial push from Fick. Finding out about how and why he became Marine was just kinda boring.

No I sure don't. I don't remember a song though, I just remember radio talk in the background......I'll see if I can find it though.
