Does the show have to wait on the book to know the storyline or will the show now just go whatever course it wants?

That's like, what assassins do bruh
I didn't anticipate the torture she'd do, or the pleasure she took in it, and that look of joy on her face was a little unsettling. But it's why I like her character so much.

She also seems to have paid a hefty price for it

You keep saying things like this which are completely contradictory and it's confusing

If they get rid of him the show will have such a total lack of narrative center that the quality will decline sharply.
I just can't imagine any way that happens, but I also don't think too much of Martin anyway so I guess who knows.

I know, it sounds confusing. Like Ned Stark, when he had to kill someone, he did it. He didn't like it, it was just what was necessary and he did it clean. Arya is going totally opposite, torturing dudes and reveling in it, and I thought she'd stay like her father.
I think that might clear it up.

Without him, none of this exists.

All the more reason to love Arya

It wouldn't surprise me, I take the Faceless Man group as someone to leave entirely unfricked with and Arya defied her orders. Not that I hope she stays blind but she should have been smarter. She doesn't know (and neither does the viewer) who she's dealing with yet.

Usually people try to kill me whenever I tell them how lame Ned was

I find his world building impressive, but his storytelling slightly weak.
Especially everything post Red Wedding. That was essentially the end of a very good story that drove things to that point. I've found the show pretty aimless since then.

Given Martin shite for what the show has done is pretty dumb

More dangerous: Rhllor, or the Many Faced God?

He still provided the backbone.
And Martin, D&D, whoever is responsible, the quality of the story has been pretty weak since that point for me.

The question in my mind is "Does the story need a leading male warrior-hero?" Right now, only Jaime kinda/sorta fits that bill. Jon has largely played that role for two seasons and, at a minimum, he will be gone for a substantial part of next season (and he may truly be dead and not coming back). You would think there would have to be a counter-balance to the evil of the Whitewalkers and the Boltons. Or, to put the question another way, now who are the good guys in Westeros?

Ned wasn't lame; he was a great warrior, and he'd probably still be alive if he were just a general.
As soon as he was sucked into the Game, he was done.

it doesn't matter who the "good guys" are, it matters who the good characters are, and there are a LOT fewer of them now than there were in the middle of season 3.
