So what is the Sheppard's deal with the Alliance?
I ask because when injured the Alliance officer quickly let him go to the medical ward after seeing his ID.

They never got to address that in the series or movie, unfortunately
There is a comic book coming out that is going to cover this.
quote:
On the 2007 Browncoat Cruise, Ron Glass revealed with Whedon's permission several facts about Book, including that Derrial was not the shepherd's real name, but the name of a man he had killed.[9]Also, a "part of [him] is artificial, he found God in a bowl of soup, and [he] is best known for his greatest failure".[10] This was part of an announcement for a comic book series based on Book's past, titled The Shepherd's Tale.[9] Scott Allie, editor for the Serenity: Better Days comic series, confirmed this announcement and stated that Dark Horse Comics was aiming for a late 2008 release,[11]; it was later announced that this would be seeing print in November 2010[12].

Comic Book?
Heck I'm so into the story I may need to get it.
I would like to see some novels, like in Star Wars and Star Trek fiction.

Comic Book?
There has been at least one other that covered the time between theshow and the movie. It explained why Shepherd was no longer on the ship. I haven't actually read it, so can't say if it is good.
ETA: There were actually 2 other comics. The Shepherd's Tale will be the 3rd.

Firefly was an ok show...but Serenity - that was a terrible F***in movie! NO WAY IN HELL is that show better than LOST.
On a side note... RIP Jericho! Gone way too soon.
