Roy's family was portrayed as just another part of "normalcy" that he is escaping from. Honestly, that's probably how a lot of young men view family life.
I wonder how Spielberg would handle it now. Dreyfuss has said he agrees with the original ending. Perhaps it would be too neat and tidy for Roy to have no attachments on earth.
