Eh, I kinda think the opposite is true. As a younger person, when you see him (Michael Douglas) as the main character of the movie you think he’s cool and the hero of the film.
Rewatching it years later, you may empathize with him (Douglas) but you see things more from Robert Duvall’s pov.

I used to watch this movie, and thought Micheal Douglas as a victim. The older I got, I realized what a crazy the dude was.
Completely opposite for me - when it came out I thought he was nuts. The older I get the more I relate to him.

That’s the wrong reaction. He’s absolutely the bad guy.
But you aren’t unique. I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older that a lot of people seem to go that way. We hold the world responsible for our misfortunes and sadness, become judgmental of those we see as flawed. Who, if they had just done what we thought was right, we all wouldn’t be in this big mess anyway. Michael Douglas’ character is one of those people.
The majority of his problems were of his own doing. He made others’ lives around him worse, including his kid. He is the selfish old man who nobody wants to be around because everything is about him and his comfort. He’s too self absorbed to see it.
He isn’t a hero or a martyr. Just a miserable middle aged man already in hell.
