You say he wasn't a gentle shepherd, but he was literally shepherding his flock when the burning bush appeared before him

Yeah I realize that. My use of "gentle shepherd" was intentional. Once he takes command of the tribes, he is not that gentle or meek, which is the popular image of a shepherd.

You don't know shite about history. Spending 4 years sacheting around Le Conte Hall does not make you an expert. You want to have a history off?

You just got finished reading some Marxian historian, Pete Garrison probably. You're gonna be convinced of that 'till next month when you get to James Lemon. Then you're going to be talking about how the economies of Virginia and Pennsylvania were entrepreneurial and capitalist way back in 1740. That's gonna last until next year; you're gonna be in here regurgitating Gordon Wood, talkin' about, you know, the pre-revolutionary utopia and the capital-forming effects of military mobilization.

But unless the director's cut explains how Legolas goes from being unable to properly swing a sword to being some great military mind, i can't get passed the baseline fault in the plot.

It does. He was a war vet.

German Guy: Have you been at war?
Legolas: On horse. And as an engineer also.
German Guy: Against whom and for whom did you fight?
Legolas: For one lord against another, at a place which cannot be remembered.

Engineers in the Middle Ages were experts when it came to siege warfare. The director's cut lets us know that Legolas knew what he was doing and wasn't just making it up as he went.

This also makes no sense. If he was a war vet, why couldn't he at least appear to know how to swing a sword? It's been a while since I've seen the movie (saw it in theaters) but I remember him getting whacked around easily before going crusading with Good Ol' Liam. He looked like he had only known which way to hold the sword because he was a blacksmith.

Is this wrong? Am I crazy? I mean seriously, was this not a major issue for anyone else? This joker from France with no military background or ability suddenly knows how to lead an army against the greatest Islamic army in history? It was just too much for me.

He did. He just didn't know the fighting techniques they were teaching him because he had been with the cavalry. They were training him how to fight like an infantryman. Plus, if you noticed, he caught on pretty quick.

since i just watched this part

a. he was nursing a hand injury from getting the cross of his wife off his brother's neck (in the fire)

b. he was just awoken by liam and his merry men

c. they were grissled knights while he wasn't actively engaged in warfare. i doubt you just pick it up like riding a bike

also, just as an added note: the lord's son who comes to claim ballian? jamie fricking lannister

I had this same issue. But fwiw Balian never really lead an army. He lead the Jerusalem garrison against the inevitable siege after Hattin. But I agree the movie should've been clearer that Balian had some prior fighting experience.
