Um no. It was the system's form of forcing him to help. Effectively destroys his life so if he doesn't want to spin the rest of his life in jail as a assumed terrorist, he will do what the computer tells him. Um yeah it was V. Once the computer had him arrested, his life was destroyed anyway whether he helped HAL or not. What was the computer going to do, unmail all of that stuff to him after he helped?

That's the point of doing something like threatening Moynahan's kid, if she helps, he lets the kid live. If not HAL kills the kid. But with Shia, the damage was already done, so no incentive to help.

HAL should have just showed Shia the same train and said if you don't do what I say I'm going to kill everyone on this train. Or show him his parents, even though he wasn't very close to them, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't just let them be murdered.

It was a total plot device used 100% to show Shia jumping from buildings after crane's smash into them, car chases, shootouts, etc.
