Well I hope it would be given one is a an exam to test what you learned in high school where the other one is for college.

You and ottothewise with his 188 IQ would get along swimmingly.

As for the movie, I don't have the fancy knowledge of filmmaking that some on here have, but I did enjoy the movie. It was different than the rehashed crap we mostly get from films now and I appreciated the use of silence to build tension, though as others have said it was overdone a little at times. Just as in psychotherapy, the effective use of silence can elicit more information than pointless words.

saw the movie earlier today and really enjoyed it. i actually really enjoyed the soundtrack, especially in the opening credits. i thought there would be a bit more chase scenes in the film but ryan gosling's arse kicking made up for it. all in all one of the better movies i've seen this year.

Based on your appreciation for Tree of Life, I take you for someone who has taste. You would enjoy Drive.

I loved Drive, but absolutely loathed Tree of Life as the steaming pile of pretentious shite that it is. Not saying that you are in this camp necessarily, but I think people wanted to like it--no, love it--so bad for so long, that they actually convinced themselves that they did.

I didn't think the back story was needed, they cleared it up with the scorpion bit. Quite clever IMO.

See, I thought the most clear and clever back story was given when Gosling met Albert Brooks:

"My hands are dirty."

"So are mine."

At that moment, you knew both of them had done unspeakable shite, and were going to do it again before the end of the film. You know as much about those 2 right then as you ever needed to. Brilliant piece of writing.

Yeah, they're far and away from being similar movies, and they can't be evaluated on the same criteria at all. I was mostly just being a dick when I said that.

I saw this with my mom and brother. I easily thought it was one of the better movies of the year, as did my brother. My mom, on the same hand, enjoyed it too. You have to know what to expect before going into it. A friend who saw it told me it was a very quiet movie, and I'd agree. But it left a big impression. Spoken words aren't the lifeline of a good movie. It was a nice change to see body language and impeccable music used to create a story. You'll either love this movie or hate it.

Edit: Sorry for replying to you Leuax, I was reading all the comments and didn't feel like going to the OP.

This movie really stuck with me. I can't quit thinking about it. Like others have said, the soundtrack is great and really sets off the dark mood of the film. I love the dark LA setting, kinda similar to Collateral. It was very stylish, but I don't see that as a negative because the characters and story are believable and acted out well.

Might try and watch it next week. Got a dentist appointment tuesday and I'll be off the rest of the day afterward.

Of course I'm just as likely to go back home get high and then be too lazy to go anywhere for the rest of the day.

Same here. I've listened to "A Real Hero" a good 40 times since seeing it. Amazing song selection

This was my first thought on leaving the theater.

I liked it.

But most audiences are going to HATE this movie with a passion.

I liked that analysis. I have to agree with the violence discussion.

quote:

I kind of hate to tell you this, but at the Cannes premiere there was cheering and applause, even some laughter, after the head-explosion scene. I mean, I think it genuinely did startle and affect people, right in the moment, but then a split second later, the reaction was more like: Well done! You got us! What an awesome combination of, I don't know, early Kubrick and '70s grindhouse! It was as if the actual effect of the horrific violence quickly got turned into a more intellectual or analytical reaction.

I'm one of those people who laughed at the violence in this film, but that's usually my reaction when I get surprised by something shocking. I have a pretty low tolerance for brutal violence, though I tend to watch a lot of films that have it, but the violence in this movie was so quick it made it easy to deal with.

I just want to add that I fell in love with Carey Mulligan during this and think her performance may have actually been the best of the film. Like Gossling, she said a lot with little dialogue, but her performance and expressions were a little more nuanced.

I fell in love with her in An Education.

Does that make me a...um...
