The whole driving along the interstate makes it an idiotic ending when they are obviously able to get off anywhere and hit a gas station, not even going into the entire siphoning angle.

No offense, but I'm not sure you watched the same movie. The movie clearly shows that going outside of any enclosure, building or otherwise, means nearly certain death. It was a choice between watching each other slowly over and over again, or just being done with it in one go. There was no help. They did not meet anyone else from outside of the supermarket. Everyone who went outside of the supermarket pretty much died. And the only reason they make it to the car is, you guessed it, someone getting slaughtered and buying them time. So the logical thing, if we're thinking logically about the interstate and all, was to say...

"The only way to get more gas is to sacrifice someone in this vehicle. Who wants to make that choice?"
