I swear, I recently started a rewatch and just now as I’m watching on Max, the quality/size whatever of the video went from okay to very high quality.?

HBO could have easily upscaled or remastered the images or did a 4K conversion. AI can also upscale images incredibly effective now.

An HD version came out several years ago. I watched the original on a DVD box set and when I did a rewatch it was very noticable.

Effective in terms of efficiency, not in terms of quality

There’s examples of this AI scrubbing completely altering the picture format and even cutting off part of the original film. Preserve film, no need to retroactively make it glossy

Odds are your TV is much better now than it was when the Wire first aired.

I’m assuming it was shot on film which means they can easily remaster it from the master

Similar to Seinfeld

I believe the original broadcast was in 4:3 and for a while that's the only way you could watch it.

Seems like they somehow adapted it to widescreen...did they do this by changing the frame (eg zooming in) and therefor losing something from the top and bottom, or did they have original media that had the wide screen aspect ratio?

I think 6 feet under is till shown in 4:3 last time I checked.

See my post. After further research im correct.

It was shot on film.

So what you originally saw back in the early 2000s a digitized version for television. which means you lose a lot of resolution and the crop it for TVs. but the original film is high resolution and wide....similar to what you would see on a movie at the theatre.

So they just go back to the original film masters and make a version that is in line with modern TVs.

My analogy is always like Bible transcriptions. they dont make the translations off of ANOTHER TRANSLATION. They go back to the original documents.

Yeah, David Simon talked about this in-depth about a decade ago.
