He was the only one who lied to the T1000 and gave John his 1st heads up. Had he been scared about the money they stole and honest, the terminator would've undoubtedly killed him then and there.
Its a good thing he wasnt away at camp and was available to solidly back john up. I think we all owe Robert "Bobby" Budnick a debt of gratitude.
