I woke this morning and watched the last twenty minutes of Apocalypse Now.

Its been seven or eight years since I have seen this movie, and i since started studying photography. I never realized how spectacular the cinematography is during the scene of the assassination of Col Kurtz.

The extreme harshness of the contrast of shadow and light is amazing.

I always wondered how much of this is the cinematographer, not the director.

Does the director tell the cinematographer what he wants, or is it left up to the artwork of the photographer?

According to the internet, Coppola gave Vittorio Storaro free reign for the film's cinematography.

Everything about that movie is amazing. The director is behind a screen with the cinematographer during filming telling him how he wants it... The cinematographer then adjusts it different ways & the director gives it the ok... Or chooses, which he likes best.

Except for that godforsaken atrocity of an ending.

Marlon Brando showed up FAT. Imagine that, a fat Green Beret officer in southeast asia. Little did they know, they hit the jackpot.

They sorta were forced to shoot from those angles/lighting.

It ended up making a great film an incredible film.

It all started with the first scene of The Godfather.

R. Lee Ermey's first film too.

Not sure if he's in the original edit, but he's a chopper pilot in the extended village assault scene in the Redux.

R. Lee Ermy's voice and a quick shot of him in a helicopter is in the original theatrical version. Charlie Sheen's first feature film as well - (uncredited extra).

There is a documentory called "Heart of Darkness" all about the making/filming of ApocNow.
That fact that the film exists is incredible.
Highly recommended.

Yes. The story behind the cinematography in The Godfather is much more interesting. Coppola almost got his arse booted because of it.
