Hadn’t McKellan won the Academy award for best actor for Gods and Monsters? The whole premise of this idea is stupid.

Nominated. He didn’t win. Gods and Monsters. Another great movie that failed hard at the box office. Winning an Academy Award doesn’t always increase your minimum salary.

That would be pre production.

They didn’t start shooting until 1999.

Development began in 1995. Production began in 1997. Filming started in 1999 and finished in 2003.

Film production typically follows five main stages: Development (idea, script, financing), Pre-Production (planning, casting, crew, locations), Production (principal photography/filming), Post-Production (editing, sound, VFX, color), and Distribution (marketing, release). This structured process moves from concept to finished, marketable product, though some models simplify it to three core phases: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production.

The cast began being announced the summer of 1999 with IM being officially announced in July 1999. Filming started late November I think.

They filmed all three movies at the same time. It's not like they did one and took 3-4 yrs to do the next.

Irrelevant. You sign a 3 movie contract knowing that you will shoot all three before the first comes out. Said contract is for lower pay than usual. You STILL have a section where you will share in profits if ANY of the movies hits the mother-lode. This is done before a single frame of the first film is shot.

Me saying you "fire your agent after the first is a hit" can still happen after all the films are shot. Clearly your agent knows nothing and as soon as you see you will be missing out on millions for all three films, you should choose to never work with them again. Hence...fired.
