you don't have to sign in to these apps with a provider? I use several of these on AppleTV and I am required to sign in with my PSVue account info

You absolutely do. He just uses the login of someone else who pays the bill for him.

Call your cable provider and see if you can reduce your bill. It was actually cheaper for me to keep a bare bones cable package and internet then get rid of cable all together. I have Cox by the way.
You'll need subscription based apps like Netflix, Hulu, and/or Amazon Prime for movies and TV shows.
Some of the live TV apps include Sling TV, Playstation VUE, and Youtube Live. There may be more, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. These cost around $40 a month for the basic package. Then you can customize it and add packages for sports or news as well as premium channels like HBO and Cinemax.
When it is all said and done, you'll probably be paying the same if not more for all the streaming apps. The only good thing about the streaming apps is that you can cancel at anytime. Most cable companies, you are locked into a 2 year contract and charge you if you cancel early.

Yes, but if you have a parent, brother, cousin, uncle, brother, sister, buddy who has cox cable (not just cox, they have a ton of things you can sign in with) you can simply get their login info and access all those channels.

Here is all the information you are looking for:
Roku is a small device that you add to your TV that basically makes it "Smart". Other devices that do the same thing or similar are:
1. FireTV (Amazon)
2. Apple TV (Apple)
3. Chromecast
4. Smart TVs that allow apps to be loaded into their memory without the separate device.
On these devices, you load apps similar to your smart phone. Some apps require a subscription either through the app itself i.e. Netflix, Hulu, or though a subscription to either a cable provider/dish provider i.e. ESPN, HBO, Showtime, Starz, Encore, AMC, to prove that you are actually paying someone to see that channel. There are plenty of apps (more so on Roku) that are free but you get what you pay for. Most of the free content is full of commercials and is of pretty poor quality.
Personally, I prefer FireTV because you can load a program to it's memory called Kodi. With the Kodi program, you basically have a search engine for any programming that exists on the internet. Yes, any movie(even some still in the theaters), TV episode, documentaries, etc that exist as streams on the internet are all available at the touch of a few buttons. Sound great right??!! Well, Kodi does take a decent bit of technical knowledge to use it correctly. Kodi "Apps" are in constant flux due to the FCC shutting down the really successful ones, so you have to update it often to keep apps that are functioning correctly.
You can also add a High definition antenna that can just pick up local channels for FREE! in pretty decent quality.
What it all boils down to is what do you require from your TV service to be satisfied. How many hours do you sit in front of a TV looking for entertainment.

So, as per this post and about half a dozen others, the advice is to buy a Roku and then engage in cable theft. Gotcha.
