Can anyone explain to me how Bobcat Goldthwait was popular in the 80s?

There are certain things that I don't like at all, but I can see how maybe someone else would like it, like Hallmark Christmas movies or mixed martial arts. One thing I will never understand is how anyone could possibly like Bobcat's stand-up in the '80s.

Yeah, I mean the stand-up and interviews, like the Letterman clip. It's like nails on a chalkboard.
It's toned down a bit in the Police Academy movies, plus there are so many people he can play off.

Sorry, that clip was funny as hell. I love that the crowd is uncomfortable through half of it. That said, Bobcat himself kind of hates that schtick/persona he created because it kind of pigeonholed him.
All that said, the album he put out about 10 years ago was fantastic comedy. I Don't Mean to Insult You, But You Look Like Bobcat Goldthwait.
