I watched Passengers despite the bad reviews and thought it was pretty solid. Iron Fist supposedly has a 16% on RT, it's definitely much better than that. I'll stick to reviewers that aren't click and quote whores. I've found IMDB to be a pretty reliable resource once you find how the scores compare to your taste. For me anything above a 6.5 is usually worth watching, anything below 6 and you either need to like the niche audience the movie is targeting or give it a hard pass.

I recently disregarded the RT rating and watched Elysium. RT was correct. It was dogshit.

Reboots and an endless amount of comic book movies aided the process.

do put quite a bit of weight into a tomato score.

I put 0 weight into the critics score because it's mostly mouth breathing SJWs who love shitty movies for the message they send while ignoring the actual quality of the movie.

I put a little stock into audience scores and I'll read a few reviews to see why it got what it did.

But I do agree on both accounts. On one hand it's bullshite to judge a movie based on a RT score, on another hand of I'm spending $50 and what little precious free time I have at a theater I'm not risking it on a movie no one liked.

I always laugh at people like you.

Comic book movies are a genre. There are also endless amounts of shitty romcoms and dramas and scifi and action movies.

Quit bitching.

I agree about the reboots though.

Perhaps if Brett Ratner would stop making shitty movies, he wouldn't be so upset that people find his movies to be shitty.

I'll give that the tomatometer isn't always right, but we've found it to be fairly accurate most of the time.

Yeah we watched passengers based on word of mouth over the RT score. Which holds for the audience % vs the critics %. We liked it and I thought it had a great high-scifi question.

But without the word of mouth, yeah, RT would have steered us clear. We don't have the time to watch every shite movie hollywood puts out.

This is the shite that people have to tell themselves when a film they are rooting against is a success.

Well you only heard 4 critics opnions at the time: Gene Siskel, Roger Ebert, Gene Shalit, and your guy from the local paper. You know these people and when to dismiss their opinions.

While it was easier to have a feel for what kind of movies specific critics would like and dislike (I tended to read Lisa Schwarzbaum and Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly) it's not like you can't still do that.

Unfortunately there are just too many peopel who no longer are willing to read a review and would rather just see the aggregate RT score which isn't even really an aggregate of the actual scores the reviewers give the movies.

FOr whatever reason they only want the Rotten/Fresh ratio and anyone who has ever read through several reviews linked on RT knows that the way they decide if a review is rotten or fresh is incredibly inconsistent.

I've always thought that if they would just give a middle ground yellow tomato it would help out a lot. It's silly that a 3/5 can sometimes be rotten and sometimes be fresh with pretty much no indication as to why they decided one way or the other.

That said, Ratner has been directing shitty to mediocre movies for years and is that last person who needs to bitch about reviews ruining the movie biz. His best three are Rush Hour, Money Talks, and The Family Man which were all made from 1997-2000 w/two of them relying heavily on the strength of Chris Tucker playing Chris Tucker. There is a reason he has mostly done TV the last 10 years and it's not b/c RT screwed him.

Horrible movies being made as obvious money grabs are ruining the film industry IMO.

Bad remakes, CGI movies with no depth, etc. Feels like one comes out every week.

I see RT as crowd sourcing. Aggregate opinion on items like on Amazon. That information is invaluable IMO. I can't tell you how many times I wasn't planning on seeing a movie until it hit 85+ on RT and I bought a ticket within days. So it works both ways.

I don't get how RT is the standard on the stupid up/down system when Metacritic uses a normalized 0-100 scale.

Give me 0-100 all day.

How about crappy films at $15 a pop has ruined the film industry.

Like crappy Batman vs. Superman film and others like its ilk flooding the theaters. Like your movies...

Brett Ratner - Director Tomatometer:

Tower Heist - 67%
Hercules - 60%
Rush Hour 3 - 18%
X-Men, the Last Stand - 58%
Movie 43 - 4%
Rush Hour 2 - 52%

The only time RT has any bearing on my movie watching is if I'm trying to decide between 2 or more pirated films in my Plex library. If I'm excited about a film I'm going to the theater to see it no matter what RT says.

No. They are a subgenre of fantasy just like found footage is a sungenre of horror.

And honestly with only one studio putting our decent comic book movies it's getting old real quick just like found footage got old quick.
