I'd imagine Paul Thomas Anderson was probably higher than some of the characters portrayed in the film during shooting. He and Quentin Tarantino were known to go on insane cocaine binges together during that time frame.

I believe he was 26 during the filming of this movie. Burt couldn’t stand a 26 year old telling him what to do.
