Finally got around to this one; finished it today...
I will say a ton of positive things about this show. This had the best pilot episode I've ever seen and Seasons 1 and 2 were just fantastic. Similar to Dexter, it got a little formulaic in 3 & 4 but well made enough that the final season would make everyone forget the slight-sloppiness of the two previous seasons.
I feel like a huge mistake was made with this show. I figured there would be a time jump, but they jumped to one of the most boring parts of prohibition. It might've needed another season, but 3 huge events happened irl during the time jump and could've easily fit into a single season
November 6, 1928- Assassination of Arnold Rothstein
February 14, 1929- St. Valentines Day Massacre
May 13, 1929- Atlantic City Conference
October, 1929- Great Depression begins
I just don't know how you make a show about Nucky Johnson, Al Capone, and Arnold Rothstein and not include at least the first three events. All were so relevant to the plot as well, they wouldn't have been shoehorned in.
Idk, the last season is still well-made but a disappointment. The ending made it clear they cared nothing to the historical events of Nucky Johnson, so why not end it earlier in 1929/1930?

They played a little loose and fast with some of the historical stuff going on around them. The final season was rushed because HBO cut off the number of episodes because they didn't feel like it was getting the ratings it should. It's also worth noting that when they killed off Jimmy it wasn't because they wanted to, it was because the actor was a hot arse mess off the screen and he left them no choice. I'm sure that changed a lot of the writing and how seasons would go after the fact.
I've always said HBO missed a HUGE opportunity of exploring Rothstein, Capone, Luciano, and Lansky with the guys they had cast for those roles in a spinoff. That would've been superb.

Boardwalk is a show not many of my friends have seen. When it is good, it is really fricking good. I watch random scenes from it on a regular basis. When it is bad, it’s downright boring. Could have been a long time GOATed show. IMO it suffered from following the sopranos.
