Hopkins

Boggy like a lot of actors of the era where kind of one note. I love his movies, but Bogart was Bogart John Wayne was John Wayne didn't matter what the character was it was kind of the same guy.

It's almost an unfair comparison. Acting during the Bogart era was very different to today's acting. Could Hopkins performed as well as Bogey back in that time? I doubt it. Timing is everything in acting.

If you are a Bogie "fan", but only saw the detective pictures, you're missing quite a lot.

Sierra Madre, African Queen and Caine Mutiny are all home run performances, and, frankly, so is Casablanca.

However, Sir Anthony's body of work is fairly impressive just in scope and that's before considering some of his career best (the 600lb cannibal in the room is Silence of the Lambs).

Having said that, is Hopkins better, on the whole, than Caine? Or Brian Cox? (The old joke, an Englishman, a Welshman and a Scot go into acting...)

This is a terrible take - while John Wayne could bring some subtlety and nuance when needed, his job rarely called for it. Not necessarily his fault. And, Bogie was 10x the "actor" that the Duke was.

Agreed! The Caine Mutiny was amazing. Bogart really sold a skipper losing his mind with those dammed ball bearings.

I've seen reports that the cast and crew gave him a standing ovation at cut. That was during an era when such displays were relatively unheard of.

Much like Jack's testimony scene in A Few Good Men, cast and crew that were scheduled to be off that day came in to watch. Mesmerizing - some of the best acting in cinema history. "Bogie can't act" - get the frick outta here.

Treasure Of The Sierra Madre and Caine Mutiny really stand out. Great depiction of a man slowly losing his sanity.

We're No Angels is also a very good one. It shows his comedic ability.

Don't buy that.

He wasn't Rick in African Queen and he was totally different in Caine.

Why is Hopkins so special? Apart from Hannibal, you could say he's just an English accent in most of his Merchant Ivory films.

Cagney was the best actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Could do gangster dramas and musicals and romantic comedies all equally well. I think he would have been a great actor in any era.

You really can't compare the two considering how different filmmaking/acting is today compared to what it was 75-80 years ago.

I always feel like acting is a lot like sports. Anything prior to like 1980 just wasn't that good. Good stories? Sure of course. Acting? Nah.

This is just the height of recency bias.

If your average Hollywood star of today woke up with 1/16th of Spencer Tracy's talent, they would die of utter shock. And that's just 1 example.

Cagney, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart and Spencer Tracy all had great range.

I love Bogart - more so in his non-detective roles, particularly The Left Hand of God and Sabrina - but I don't hesitate for a second voting for Hopkins.
