And the fact Billy Bob Thornton was Johnny Tyler cracks me up

Val Kilmer was excellent.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is Billy Bob Thornton chewing his card playing buddies out.

I liked that Tombstone actually included his last line. That last scene was a great way to end the movie, much better than how Wyatt Earp ended.

Kilmer -better in the movies and it isn't even close.

Quaid -better interpretation and it isn't even close.

I read books.

The question wasn't which one was more historically accurate..it was which one was "best" in the context of the movie.

The title of the thread is Best Doc Holliday?
Quaid played the best Doc Holliday per closest to the real person.

Each to his own.

I like both, but if I'm worrying about historical accuracy I'll read about the man. Kilmer's Doc was just an amazing character.

quote:

Ed, what an ugly thing to say... does this mean we're not friends anymore? You know, Ed, if I thought you weren't my friend, I just don't think I could bear it.

quote:

I have not yet begun to defile myself.

quote:

I'm your huckleberry.

quote:

Oh, Johnny, I forgot you were there. You may go now.

quote:

Why Johnny Ringo. You look like someone just walked over your grave.

quote:

Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!

quote:

I piss on you Wyatt.

quote:

That's Latin, darlin'. Evidently Mr. Ringo's an educated man. Now I really hate him.

quote:

I have two guns; one for each of ya.

quote:

Doc Holliday: Oh, I beg to differ, sir. You and I started a game we never got to finish. Play for blood, remember?
Johnny Ringo: I was just fooling about.
Doc Holliday: [smiles] I wasn't.

quote:

It's true, you are a good woman. Then again, you may be the antichrist.

quote:

Barber, you may proceed sir.

Quaid did have some good lines of his own though:
quote:

Dave Rutabaugh is an ignorant scoundrel! I disapprove of his very existence. I considered ending it myself on several occasions but self-control got the better of me.

quote:

All of you can kiss my rebel dick.

quote:

My mama always told me never put off till tomorrow people you can kill today.

Quaids character was probably more true to life, but Kilmers is a helluva lot more entertaining.
This. For a popcorn flick, Kilmer. For a truer to life presentation. Quaid.

But I do prefer Wyatt Earp over Tombstone. Yeah yeah i know, "All of you can kiss my rebel dick"

This snippet of a review on IMDB pretty sums it up:

quote:

Then there is Val Kilmer, as Doc Holliday...While Dennis Quaid, in WYATT EARP, gave the most realistic portrayal of the dying dentist-turned-gambler/gunfighter ever recorded on film (he was superb), Kilmer, relying on bloodshot eyes, an ambiguous sexuality, and a Brando-esque line delivery, literally steals TOMBSTONE, and has become the 'Doc' everyone remembers. He is so charismatic that you nearly forget that the Earps are the focus of the story! Watch for his early scene confronting a shotgun-wielding (and chubby!) Billy Bob Thornton (three years before SLING BLADE), out to kill Wyatt, and you'll see my point.

So it depends on how you're grading it - if historical accuracy, Quaid; if better character, Kilmer.

For me, Kilmer is and always will be Doc Holliday, even if the Doc Holliday he portrayed was a far cry from the real Doc Holliday.

I honestly believe that the fact that Kilmer is such a prick and so widely disliked in Hollywood is the main reason he wasn't even nominated for a Best Supporting Actor AA. Because that performance should've taken home an Oscar.
