They could easily write something that brings in a new generation while keeping the three remaining ghostbusters. Say, Winston is the only active of the original ghostbusters still working. Ray maybe doesn't get around well anymore and can't catch ghosts. He repairs equipment and gives advice. Peter is somehow very rich. Married money or something. Egon is either dead or maybe he's in a mental institution.

Winston and Ray train then next generation to take over. Peter makes an unexpected comeback to save the day when all looks lost.
